Untamed Nature

I had recently gone for a trek to the Himalayas and this has been one of the most memorable experiences. We took a short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla to start our trek to Phakding. Walking on stoned pathways, I was surrounded by tall trees and clear and crisp water flowing down the mountains. Long and heavy metal suspension bridges over Dudh Kosi river, are a true marvel of engineering. The sound of the river flowing down the valley is energizing and a reminder of the dynamism of life.

The valley is dotted with small villages, shops and lodges. Buddhist monasteries and prayer wheels keep your faith alive in surmounting these mountains. Little farmlands add to the charm with fresh produce of cabbage, pumpkin, leafy vegetables, carrots, radish, wheat, corn etc. Donkeys loaded with gas cylinders and provisions for the villagers and yaks carrying the luggage of the travelers, it was a unique sight. The Sherpas are gentle and serve with such humility that they make the whole experience smoother and less daunting.

The trek got steeper as we crossed over from Phakding to Namche Bazaar. Although, the experience is stunning, it’s also a test of endurance — mental and physical. As we climbed higher, we felt embraced and protected by the mountains. Snow peaked and magnificent, the mountains stand tall and high. The morning rays of sun add a golden hue to the peaks. And fluffy clouds, cold air, soaring eagles soaring, make the ambience purely magical.

Upon reaching Namche Bazaar, we took a short helicopter ride the next day, to see the Gokyu Ri lakes. Exquisite, the vivid turquoise blue lakes are a stark contrast against the white and brown mountains. Due to the thin altitude air, we spent too little time to absorb this magical vista. From here, we went up to Everest View Hotel to catch a glimpse of the peak that has brought many brave men to their knees. We were very fortunate to get clear skies because the clouds play hide and seek rather frequently.

Next day, we flew to Everest Base camp. When we landed at Everest Basecamp my emotions knew no bounds. I was transfixed while looking at Mt Everest. The mountains exude a feeling of power and respect. Serene, still and expansive, words defy the experience of being in their proximity. There was a feeling of intense expansiveness and openness, tears streaming down my face, I felt humbled and privileged to witness the peak in all its might. My heart sang and danced; my face glowed like a person drunk with love. I was in paradise!

I have come back rejuvenated with the most beautiful memories etched in my heart. The trek was even more phenomenal because of the friends that I made over this trip. Moreover, it was my first trek, ah what a way to get initiated to the mighty mountains. Mountains stand the test of time; they are witness to history; they unleash courage; they inspire you to stretch your boundaries and explore possibilities. Wisdom flows like waterfalls, flowers blossom like smiles, clouds swirl like whispering conversations, trees grow tall like dreams…the journey is absolutely mystical as I walked slowly soaking in the scenery and transcended to deeper realms.
